REI on Colorado Matters

On Tuesday  March 29 I will be a guest on Colorado Matters, discussing our recent report on the state of the state’s economy. Our report was also covered in the Denver Post last week.

My conversation with the host Ryan Warren revolves around what we have called Colorado’s Lost Decade. The punchline is that the state is worse off today than it was 10 years ago by many measures of well-being, including higher poverty and unemployment rates, and lower household incomes.  In the interview I touch on a couple of themes that I have discussed in this blog. First, I talk about the need for regionally driven economic development strategies–the state’s diversity precludes one-size-fits-all solutions. I also talk about the challenges some of the state’s rural regions are facing, including population losses and boom-bust cycles. A few solutions are offered as well. Finally, I offer some reasons for optimism as the state resets itself after the Great Recession.
